MTSS - Multi-Tiered System of Supports

Supporting Every Student: An Overview of MTSS

In our schools, we want to make sure every child has what they need to thrive, both in their schoolwork and in their emotional well-being. To do this, we use a helpful framework called the Multi-Tiered System of Support, or MTSS. Think of it as a roadmap that helps us identify early on if a student might need a little extra help or a different approach to learning. By using this structured system, our teams can look at helpful data to provide the right kind of support at the right time, ensuring your child stays on the path to success.

MTSS is organized into three levels, or tiers. As a student moves through these tiers, the support becomes more personalized and focused. Here is a simple look at how these levels work together to help our students:

MTSS Support Levels Overview

  Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3
Who is it for? ALL Students SOME Students FEW Students
Who provides support? General education teacher General education teacher, Specialists, Related Services Specialized staff
What tools are used? Core instructional curriculum Supplemental core instructional materials/resources; Interventions Intensive interventions
How is it delivered? Whole class and small group Small group Small group or 1-2 students

We regularly check in on every student's progress to see how they are doing. If the information shows that a student might benefit from Tier 2 or Tier 3 support, our team meets to discuss the best way to help. We continue to keep a close eye on their growth to see if the current plan is working well. This flexible approach allows us to increase support if needed, or celebrate their progress and move back to a lower level of support when they are ready.

Your partnership is vital. If our team recommends Tier 2 or Tier 3 support for your child, your classroom teacher will reach out to you directly. We will explain the specific plan, including the type of extra help your child will receive, which staff member will be working with them, and how often they will meet. Our goal is to keep you fully informed and involved in your child's learning journey.
