Special Events/Projects at Reed School

Magazine Drive- Reed School participates in the annual District 92 magazine drive. QSP, a division of Readers Digest, is the company with whom we work. Profits are shared between the buildings with the majority of the money going to extra-curricular programs in District 92. Reed School has always led the way in fundraising for this magazine drive. Prizes are presented to the students who become involved in the sale. Success in this magazine project helps our district keep the cost of extra programs to a minimum. Your help is appreciated.

Lymphoma and Leukemia - Association Pennies for Patients- We will continue to support this worthwhile organization that has provided assistance to families dealing with these two diseases. Children will be asked to drop pennies and other change into a canister provided by the association. Last year we raised over $400.

Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13.  We will practice leaving the building in an orderly fashion as the fire department monitors our evacuation. The Northwest Homer Fire Department will give an assembly on October 19 to small groups throughout the day to remind students of fire safety at school and at home. The department will also bring the Safety House back to Reed School from October 24 through October 26. We are extremely lucky to have such excellent safety instruction from our local fire department.

Family Dinner- Reed School and the Parent faculty Association would like to continue the “Italian Feast” night that was initiated last year. We will either have a beef dinner or something similar to last year’s menu. The tentative date for our family dinner night is Saturday, October 27, 2007. As in the past we will attempt to keep the cost of the dinner to a minimum so that all of our families may participate.

Tree Lighting Ceremony - The fourth annual Reed School Christmas Tree lighting ceremony will take place on December 7,  2007, at 7:00 p.m. Plan to join us and get into the holiday spirit.

Open Gyms - We would like to organize open gym nights for January and February. We need a group of parents to volunteer to organize the open gym night activities. It would be wonderful if parents from each grade would form a committee to organize the activities, date, refreshments, etc. Please call me at Reed School, 708-301-0692.

Fun Fair - The annual Fun Fair is scheduled in the early spring at Ludwig School. The activities are appropriate for our second and third graders. This is one of the most enjoyable activities sponsored by our Parent Faculty Association.

The Saint Jude Mathathon is an annual March event that provides funds for the Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. We have raised over $100,000 for St. Jude since Reed School reopened in 1994. The children receive prizes for their efforts and enjoy working math problems in their math Fun Books and CD’s.

Assembly programs will be offered throughout the year. Our Parent Faculty Association sponsors the majority of these assemblies. The profit from the pen and pencil machine pays for the rest of the special assembly programs.

Other Activities - If you have ideas regarding any additional activities for our school, please don’t hesitate to contact our school office or attend a Parent Faculty Association meeting. These meetings will be held at Ludwig School in the library. A schedule of dates will be sent home with your child.
