Required Dental Exam Information
Illinois State Board of Education mandates that all children entering second grade have a dental examination. The completed form must be turned in to Reed School’s Health Office no later than May 15, 2012. A copy of the form may be obtained by calling the school office. If a child is unable to have the dental exam due to a lack of insurance, the parent still must fill out the form with the appropriate waiver reason checked. Any questions regarding your child’s dental exam can be directed to our Health Aide in the school office at (708) 301-0692.

February 2012
As of February 3rd we will have completed 100 days of school! Our 2nd graders will be participating in 100-day activities and Reed is also collecting Pennies for Pasta as part of this celebration. This fundraiser will end on February 10th. The proceeds from this competition will be donated to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The winning classroom will earn a pasta lunch from Olive Garden. Individual classrooms may be participating in a variety of additional 100 day activities – please check your weekly newsletters.
We have some events coming up in February for parents and students. Our First Family Math Night will be held on Thursday, February 9th 6:00-7:30 for families that are registered for the event. Coming later in the month, will be our Parent-Student Technology Night. Watch newsletters for details and registration information on this event coming February 21st.
We will have a free assembly sponsored by Illinois American water on February 9th called Water Pirates of Neverland: The Search for the Great Green, which will educate our students on water conservation. Abraham Lincoln will be visiting Reed School on February 28th. This assembly is paid for by the generous assembly donation from our PFA – thank you! PFA will be hosting Fun Fair on Saturday, February 25th (11-2) – please come out and join the fun!
Throughout February we will be preparing students for our upcoming testing during the first week of March. Testing begins on Tuesday, March 6th. Third graders will be taking the state test, ISAT, in the areas of reading and math. Second graders will be taking the Terra Nova tests in reading, math, language, vocabulary word analysis, and the In View. Testing will take place in the mornings March 6th – March 9th. Please help students do their best by making sure they get plenty of rest, eat a nourishing breakfast, and encourage them to put forth good effort. Talk with your students about this testing to help reduce their anxiety by assuring them their teachers have prepared them to be successful.
Reed School is continuing to work toward our goal of reading 12, 000 books by June 1st. Students should continue to read books at home and with their families and bring in their bricks reflecting their completed reading to be displayed in our hallways.
Our community readers for February will be “loved ones” – be on the look out for the sign up sheet to come home. We look forward to having you visit and read a story with our classes!
A reminder, parents are not sponsoring the Valentine parties at Reed. The classroom teachers will plan activities for this day. When sending items to school, please adhere to our new procedure of not sending any food items for students to share in classrooms, which is posted on Reed’s web page. Valentine cards are acceptable to pass out; please do not send treats attached to the cards. Non-food items such as stickers, pencils, erasers are great ways to share and celebrate! Please refer to teacher’s weekly newsletters for information. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parent volunteers at Reed – your support and assistance for Reed School and staff is truly appreciated!
Lastly, I would like to remind parents that we try to get the students outside as much as possible for lunch recess. Research shows that students benefit from the physical activity by being more focused and energized in the afternoon. So, please be sure students are dressed properly for outside winter activity.
Sincerely,
Mary Jasinski
